Alopecia Areata: Sudden loss of hair in patches usually rounded without inflammation or itching. Treatment: Prognosis is poor if extensive and begins in childhood.Spontaneous recovery in localised area with in weeks or months. The loss of hair may present with sharply demarcated bald patches on the scalp beard eyelashes or on any other hairy area.The baldness may involve the whole scalp (Alopecia Totalis)or the whole body (Alopecia universalis).In this disease both sexes are equally affected.Any age may be affected but it is more common in childhood.At least 20 percent of cases occur before the age of 10. Hereditary: It has often occurs in several members of the family. There are also reports of identical cases in twins.A hereditary history in at least 20 percent of a series of cases is not unusual.Psychological factors: Each case must be judged on its merits.
