Alopecia areata

#Alopecia areata is sudden loss of hair in patches usually rounded without information or itching. In adults it’s common,often recurrent condition of obscure aetiology.Some 20% of cases may have atopic autoimmune or pre hypertensive background.Positive family history in 6-20% of cases.Role of psychological factors still under. Solitary or multiple,well defined asymptomatic smooth shiny patches of Alopecia on scalp and beard or may involve eyebrows,eyelashes or all hair of the body. Complete loss of hair from scalp called Alopecia Totalis and from the body Alopecia universalis.Exclammation mark hair at the periphery of patches.Prognosis uncertain.Half the cases where only part of the scalp involved recover in a year.Relapses in 40-50% of cases within 5 years.Rapid increase loss of eyebrows and eyelashes and severe nail changes carry poor prognosis. Allopathic treatment is unsatisfactory.Systemic &intralesional steroids help in a sizeable number of cases.However Alopecia Totalis and universalis respond poorly.
