Dry Skin

There are varying degree of dry skin, from mild dryness with a little flaking to severe dryness with large pices of shed skin and alligator skin appearance. The main cause of dry skin is lack of moisture, not oil, although oil and grease help dry skin to soften. They do not do this by increasing the oil content of the skin.Oils marely serve as a barrier to prevent water from evaporating from the skin.In effect, they help the skin to moisturizer itself from within.

Water loss from the skin comes about in many ways. When humidity is low and the surrounding air in motion, water losses increase. These conditions are produced by outdoor winter sports.Dry skin is usually most apparent in cold weather.Indoor heated air is very low in moisture and forced air heat produces currents moving past the skin adding to the drying effect.Out door wind currents evaporate surface skin moisture producing chapping.
Hot summer sun heat and wind gusts also produce excessive drying.Frequent bathing may actually have a drying effect by the evaporation of water on the skin after leaving the bath and removing the protective layer of oil on the skin surface.some detergents may degrease the skin and accelerate its drying.
The best moisturizer is Petrolium Jelly or Vaseline. But problem is, this is very greasy and sticky, but they work very effectively. This is also a lot cheaper than most dry skin products.
