Grey Hairs

Grey hairs are a sign of old age,but greying can occur in other situations as well.Hairs on a patch of vitiligo often also become grey, and the hairs which regrow in alopecia areata may also be grey intially. Both these situations do not require an treatment apart from the treatment being given for the original disease because the hairs in due course regain their black colour.Patients having albinism and piebaldism also develop grey hairs in the white skin areas, but these hairs continue to remain the same.
Premature grey hairs in the term used if a person develops grey hair earliet than 25 years of age.It is especially common among the Pakistan and India and seems to be inherited as an autosomal dominant character. Most patients have one or both the parents also having premature grey hairs. The greying occurs mostly in individual hairs which are diffusely scattered on the scalp, but a majority of the grey hairs are limited to the top of the scalp or the temporal areas. This type of premature greying is called canities.Sometimes, a patient develops grey hairs in a localised area only.Since most of the times, such areas occur in the frontal region of the scalp only, this is commonly called a white forelock. The skin in both these conditions essentially remains normal.
